Life of Raden Ajeng Kartini

Raden Ajeng Kartini, also known as Raden Ayu Kartini was a prominent Indonesian activist who advocated for
women’s rights and female education.

R.A Kartini is the daughter of the Regent of Jepara. She was born on April 21, 1879. Kartini suffered greatly because she had to be secluded. However, she found enthusiasm by reading books and corresponding by sending letters with many people.

“After darknes comes light”

Kartini’s letters contains ideas
and hopes for a more advanced
and independent life for
women. Through her letters,
Kartini fought for equal rights
(emancipation) for women.
After she died, her letters were
recorded with the title; “Dor
Duisternis Tot Licht”

She was born into a family in
Javanese noble the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia ). After attending a Dutch language elementary school, she wanted to pursue further education, but Javanese women at that time were prohibited from
pursuing higher education. She met with various officials and influential people, including JH Abendanon, who was in charge of implementing the Dutch Ethical Policy.

She is the daughter of Raden Mas Adipati Ario Sosroningrat, a patih who was appointed regent
of Jepara immediately after Kartini was born.
